For our series “It Will be Ours” we created a miniature set to be used in the background of our main scene. This is an old-school Hollywood device we have used many times before.
The set was relatively simple, with a foreground of various greenery, a mid ground of two “tree trunks” covered in moss and an opal background with plants and gels placed behind it.
We hung the plants off of additional branches to create a natural flow and similar colored gels were hung in a seemingly random manner to create a misty forest.
The Set design itself was less about creating a realistic space and more about creating a sense of flow that worked with the strong directional composition of the main image.
Just for fun, we let our son come in and shoot his own set-up and we must admit, he might be on to something. As an homage to him, this photo provides clues as to a little mystery we placed within the image, “It WIll Be Ours.” Can you guess what it might be?
